New York Sports Betting Regulations

The NFL is the last major American sports league to sign an official betting deal. It announced this month that three sportsbooks are the league’s official betting partners. In exchange for getting access to official league data, these brands will promote their relationship with the league. NFL marketing will tie their brands to online and on-air statistics. The league can opt out of the agreement after years three and four. That said, the NFL is expected to honor the terms of the deal.

The NFL concluded that its ideal sports gambling legislation would include substantive licensing requirements for sportsbooks, clear markets for consumers, and protections for consumers. Bets would be resolved by using league data and would prohibit insider betting. The league also said it would place the onus on the operators to keep out insiders. Its ideal sports gambling legislation had to be supported by the 32 owners of the league’s teams. In March 2021, BetMGM and DraftKings announced partnerships with six NBA/NHL teams.

As of 2019, there are nine licensed sports betting sites in New York. Four of these sites launched on January 8, 2022. Another nine sites are in the process of obtaining regulatory approval. The New York State Gaming Commission lists all regulated NY sports betting sites. Aside from these sportsbooks, a variety of online gaming sites are licensed in New York. These sportsbooks offer the best odds, as well as a host of other benefits.
