The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game in which players try to make the best five-card poker hand out of a combination of their own two private cards and the five community cards. There are various variants of the game. The most popular is Texas hold ’em, which replaced seven-card stud as the most common form of poker in the United States in the 2000s.

The basic game is played with a standard 52-card pack, sometimes supplemented by one or two jokers for added wild cards. The dealer deals the cards and each player must ante before the cards are dealt.

Normally, the player to the left of the dealer is called the “small blind” and the player to the right of the dealer is the “big blind.” These positions require forced bets before the cards are dealt.

After the cards are dealt, players may check or call a bet, raise or fold. They must verbally state their intention to take any action.

A player who makes a large bet or raises repeatedly is said to “buy the pot.” This prevents opponents from getting free or cheap cards that could complete a drawing hand.

When the dealer calls the ante, each player must ante again, but no player is allowed to ante more than he or she had put in before the start of the betting round. This rule applies to all players seated at the table.

Players are also prohibited from making a string bet, which is a conspicuously small bet made with a very strong hand in the hope of getting a call from one or more opponents who would otherwise fold to a normal-sized bet. It is a violation of public cardroom rules and is considered a strategy for cheating.
