In Texas hold ’em, each player begins the game with two cards face down and five community cards face up in three stages: the flop, turn, and river. Each stage is followed by a round of betting based on the poker hands that can be made with any combination of the five community cards and a player’s two hole cards.
Betting options include check, call, raise, and fold. The winner of the hand is the player who holds the best combination of the five cards – based on the official poker hand rankings – that does not fold.
The most common poker variation is Texas hold ’em. Other versions include Omaha, Stud, and Razz.
Some games also have house rules that are set by the owners of the table, and those laws should be written down as guidelines for all players. Some of these house rules may vary from one location to another, but they all must adhere to the basic rules of each particular game.
