The Official Poker Hand Rankings

Poker is a family of card games that require skill and a great deal of luck. There are many different variations of the game, and it can be played socially for pennies or matchsticks, or professionally for thousands of dollars.

A poker table has several important aspects: a dedicated dealer, a button, and blinds. The blinds are forced bets that give players something to chase. They also help ensure that players don’t always fold preflop, a practice that can cost them a lot of chips.

In Texas hold ’em, each player begins the game with two cards face down and five community cards face up in three stages: the flop, turn, and river. Each stage is followed by a round of betting based on the poker hands that can be made with any combination of the five community cards and a player’s two hole cards.

Betting options include check, call, raise, and fold. The winner of the hand is the player who holds the best combination of the five cards – based on the official poker hand rankings – that does not fold.

The most common poker variation is Texas hold ’em. Other versions include Omaha, Stud, and Razz.

Some games also have house rules that are set by the owners of the table, and those laws should be written down as guidelines for all players. Some of these house rules may vary from one location to another, but they all must adhere to the basic rules of each particular game.
