Poker is a family of card games in which players compete for an amount of money or chips contributed by the player themselves (called the pot). The underlying skill of Poker is to maximize winnings while minimizing losses with poor hands.
Texas hold ’em is the most common form of poker and is played in tournaments around the world. The poker rules vary among different forms, but in most variants of the game, each player begins with an equal number of chips and continues playing until either one of the players has all of their chips or a deal is made between the remaining players to “chop” the prize pool.
Before the cards are dealt, each player must put down a small bet called an ante. The ante is a nominal amount and is placed in the middle of the table by a player on the left side of the dealer button.
Players then make their bets in a clockwise direction. The person on the dealer button changes after each round.
Cheating
A variety of moves are used by cheaters, but the most common is to try to reveal another player’s hole cards. This is considered poor etiquette and can lead to a player being forced to fold their hand or even being penalized.
Other common cheating moves include hiding high-value chips, counting or moving them closer to the middle, trying to see another player’s hole cards and verbally saying that they “Raise” but then only putting in chips for calling, knowing they’ll be forced to raise by the dealer.
