It is considered bad form to discuss a hand with another player, advisor, or spectator, and to reveal a hole card to any other person while action is pending on the hand. It is also not allowed to “play behind” when the dealer has not yet tabled a hand. In Stud poker, cards may not be picked up while action is pending; proper mucking involves putting the cards down face down and putting them out of sight.
Players use chips to represent their bet amounts during play. These are typically valued at $1, $5, $10 or $20 each. Some casinos and home games use higher denominations, but the values of chips are generally the same across poker venues.
The official rules of poker are designed to maintain a high level of professionalism and fairness during the game. There is a great deal of local custom and preference, but the rules outlined here are widely accepted as the most expert-approved poker laws. It is also customary for individual clubs or groups of players to make their own house rules, but these should be written down and made clear to all.
