The Official Poker Rules

The game of poker is a card game that combines luck with skill. In the long run, players who apply sound strategy will win more hands than those who play for chance alone. The game has evolved into many variations that are played socially for pennies and matchsticks, or professionally for thousands of dollars.

Regardless of the specific game being played, most of the rules and regulations are similar. Most games revolve around betting, and the table positions are the same. There is a small blind, a big blind and a dealer button, with the player to the left of the button acting as the “button.” Players are allowed to raise their bets during a betting interval as long as no one before them in that same interval has raised theirs. A player may also “check,” which means they have no intention of raising their bet, but must call any bets made before them.

After all the players receive their two hole cards, the dealer puts out a third community card face up, known as the flop. Then a second round of betting occurs, with the player to the left of the dealer beginning the action.

In no-limit games, a player must either verbally state the amount of their raise or put chips into the pot in a single motion, otherwise it is considered a string bet. Players must also keep their cards in full view of their opponents at all times. Higher denomination chips should be clearly visible, and a player who covers their cards will be disqualified from the event.
